Myanmar (Burma)

Project type: Development
Sectors: Food security, health, water and sanitation

A new government was formed in March 2011. Since then Myanmar has started giving signs of opening up from its political isolation. The Cesvi strategy aims to improve living conditions of the population through combined actions in three sectors: health, food security and water and sanitation. Cesvi wishes to involve local authorities and aid bodies to guarantee a better chance of sustainability of the activities. The experience developed in the fight against malaria has made Cesvi a lead player in the realisation of the National Programme in the Control of Malaria in Shan State and in the Mandalay Region where it was involved in awareness, prevention and diagnosis activities in 2011. New projects linked to nutrition started in the same areas foresee the management of natural resources and income generation with the objective of contributing to food security and alleviating poverty in vulnerable communities. 2011 saw the completion of activities which responded to the emergency provoked by the Cyclone Nargis in 2008.

Local partners: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Social Welfare, Ever Green Group
International partners: FAO, Welthungerhilfe, Acted
Financial backers: Italian government bodies, Global Fund, UNOPS, LIFT, USAID, Cariverona Foundation/Medici per la Pace, private donors
